Pricing Calculator models a plan before the bill exists
AWS Pricing Calculator is a free web-based planning tool for modelling AWS services and estimating charges. You configure expected service usage, Region, resource characteristics, and supported purchase options, and the calculator exposes the assumptions and calculations behind the estimate. Estimates can be organized into groups so the financial model follows architecture or ownership boundaries rather than becoming one undifferentiated total.
This time horizon separates it from Cost Explorer. Pricing Calculator is useful before deployment or when planning a future change; Cost Explorer analyzes recorded AWS usage and can forecast from that history. A migration team might use Pricing Calculator for a target-state estimate and later compare the real deployed workload in Cost Explorer to detect where assumptions diverged from actual behavior.
An estimate is only as complete as its assumptions
Calculator output reflects the information entered. A realistic architecture estimate needs more than the headline compute resource: attached storage, request volume, data processing, data transfer, backups, monitoring, support, expected utilization, scaling shape, and other dependent services can materially change total cost. Service-specific calculator pages expose the dimensions relevant to that service, so there is no universal checklist that replaces understanding the architecture.
AWS documentation explicitly describes calculator values as estimates rather than bills and notes that taxes are not included. Current public service pricing remains authoritative. For exam scenarios, the important distinction is conceptual: use the Calculator to estimate planned usage, not to discover the exact reason last month's existing bill increased.
Model workload shape, not just resource count
A static '10 servers × 730 hours' estimate can overstate or understate an elastic workload. A stronger model represents baseline versus peak demand, scheduled operation, storage growth, request volume, and purchase options separately. If the design has multiple Regions or environments, model them explicitly because both service pricing and transfer paths can differ.
Estimates should be versioned alongside their assumptions so teams can explain why the number changed. When an architecture changes from self-managed EC2 to a managed or serverless service, the billing dimensions often change too; comparing only the old and new compute-hour line items would miss operational and usage-model differences.
